At HWM Caterham, we believe the most memorable drives begin with a simple recipe: light weight, responsive performance and a direct connection between car and driver. Few sports cars capture that spirit quite like the Caterham Seven.
The Miami Special Edition brings a vibrant new chapter to that story. Created for a starring role at the Miami Grand Prix, this limited run of just twelve cars combines the Seven’s unmistakable character with colours inspired by one of the world’s most distinctive cities.
With its hand-built construction, remarkable performance and unusual journey to the Formula 1 stage, this is a Seven with a story to tell.
The project began with an ambitious brief: create a fleet of special-edition Caterham Sevens for the Miami Grand Prix Drivers’ Parade, carrying Formula 1’s drivers around the circuit ahead of the race.
Eleven cars were intended for the parade, with a twelfth built as a reserve. Each was finished in Miami-inspired colours, bringing a fresh personality to the Seven’s familiar silhouette.
With a demanding deadline, Caterham assigned two builders to each car, rather than the usual one. Their contribution was recorded on each car’s build plaque, which carries both builders’ names—a fitting detail for a project that called for such a collective effort.
Once completed at Caterham’s Dartford factory, the cars were transported to Paris before being flown across the Atlantic. A team of five Caterham specialists followed to prepare and support them in Miami.
The Miami Special Edition quickly attracted attention. David Coulthard took to Ocean Drive in one of the cars for promotional filming, while another gave visitors to the Formula 1 FanZone the opportunity to settle into the driving seat. More than a thousand fans took their turn.
Behind the scenes, preparations continued for the parade. To meet the organisers’ requirements, each car was temporarily restricted to first gear, with engine speed limited to keep the procession at an appropriate pace.
Unfortunately, the weather intervened. With electrical storms forecast and the event programme disrupted, the Drivers’ Parade was cancelled. After an extraordinary effort to bring the cars to Miami, their planned appearance could not go ahead.
That unexpected turn became part of the edition’s history, with a subsequent opportunity to appear at the Laguna Seca Historics providing another stage for these distinctive Sevens.
Beneath the Miami colours lies everything that makes a Caterham so compelling.
A 2.0-litre Ford Duratec four-cylinder engine produces 210bhp, powering a car weighing just 560kg. The result is 0–60mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 136mph.
Yet the appeal reaches far beyond the figures. The low driving position, immediate responses and close connection to the road make every input feel meaningful. It is an experience shaped by simplicity, with light weight and carefully considered engineering at its heart.
The Miami Special Edition brings together the qualities we love about Caterham: individuality, craftsmanship and an unmistakable sense of fun.
Produced in a run of just twelve, it adds a colourful motorsport connection to a sports car already celebrated for making every journey feel like an occasion.
